It is hard to believe that we have been here in Santa Fe now for almost two months now and in that time I have been really fortunate to be able to focus more on my painting. With the natural beauty and light all around me all I have to do is walk out my front door for inspiration.
I have been conceptualizing a series of paintings that combines my love of architecture while celebrating the extraordinary light and beautiful landscapes here in New Mexico. Through my explorations I am discovering how much I am drawn to the strength of the shadows cast by the seemingly unfiltered light and how they create almost abstract forms on the building walls. And I love the strong contrast of the brilliant cool blue skies and the warmth of the stucco walls. The simplicity of Pueblo architecture creates the perfect canvas for shadows, light and reflection.
In preparation for the finished paintings I have been working from my own photographs and have created a painting sketch book. In it I have started to make studies of the various subjects I intend to paint. The sketchbook allows me to work out the overall composition, create colors studies, and prepare for the various steps for the final painting. The top picture includes my first completed painting for the series.
I am very excited to have started my series and will be sharing my progress with you. As always I welcome and appreciate all of your comments.

I look forward to it - light IS sometimes all about the shadow, isn't it?
I wonder if you are going to visit Mesa Verde in Colorado while you are down there...based on your Sante Fe architecture & light representations I'd love to see what you do with the cliff dwellings...more angular planes
Michael ~ these are beautiful. I am looking forward to seeing the series develop.
